Why hire models when you can promote your clothing line yourself? I’d love to see Gwen Stafeni break out of her L.A.M.B. marketing shell and sample some other designers, especially after seeing her with this tragic L.A.M.B. purse. The tan and brown checkerboard pattern accented with a green, yellow, and brown strap down the middle just doesn’t work. I can’t tell if Gwen wants to be the next Louis Vuitton or the next Vans, because her checkerboard print just seems all over the place. And don’t me started on that outfit. At least Kingston looks cute.

Here’s one clutch that belongs in a Janet Jackson music video. This Renaud Pellegrino Bejeweled Panther Purse features just that – a black Swarovksi crystal panther with a green eye on a silver-studded satin background. It’s not just the feline design that makes this clutch unusual; the boxy frame opens like a drawer, with an inside compartment that can be pushed from one side to the other. Unfortunately, “unusual” only goes so far when it comes to handbags that you actually want to wear. Unless you’re headed to a benefit at the zoo or a black-tie safari, I’d leave this kitschy number on the store shelf.

Lately it’s been more trouble than it’s worth to locate Fendi purses that actually live up to the brand’s name. Most of the recent stuff has been monstrous – and that’s putting it kindly. I do, however, have true kind words for the new Logo Sea Tote, which is kind of untimely in that autumn is fast approaching and I have no plans to wear a shiny, coated linen bag with my lovely new wool coat. But since a trip to the seaside is never out of the question, it makes sense to grab a fun, sensible and lightweight bag that will easily hold everything. This fits the bill nicely: Its tobacco hue is lovely, and the lively turquoise Palazzo logo print makes me want to jet off to Italy, stat. Available for $580 at Saks.

Ooh, this is not a flattering photo of Lindsay Lohan. But while she tries to redeem her scruffy hat, baggy cardigan, and splotchy face with a fancy Balenciaga Motorcycle purse, I’m just not feeling the black and white stripes. The too-funky prison-chic stripes (something you’d think LiLo would want to, ahem, avoid right now) undermine the handbag‘s sophisticated yet edgy appeal. I hope Fendi is hiring, because I could easily throw together a bag for them if this is the sort of look they’re going for nowadays. Forget glamorous and upscale – now the fashion house is designing things I could have made in art class. The Louis Vuitton Speedy in Epi! I love it!
