I can’t even remember the last time I admired a brown purse. I just don’t find much to love about them – if I had to choose a neutral, it would be the more versatile black, or tan, or even white. I lost interest in Balenciaga a long, long time ago, right around the time of the City bag’s major heyday. Though the label never fails to design products that are designed well and constructed with careful thought, they also haven’t really caught onto the fact that, every now and then, people crave a little variety in their lives. I mean, really, just how many tasseled motorcycle bags does a woman need?

However, I’m not quite sure they’re on the right path with the Edition Ottoman Dupionne Tote, either. What is going on here? This egg-like thing is one of the least glamorous bags ever. There’s a whole lot of canvas on it, amplified by a little blue leather to, er, shake things up, I guess. I can see the mod influence in the round handle and even in the unusual shape, but the end result is more of the same: snooze. L-O-L-A, Lola here is very retro, but not so much that she’s begging to be taken to the roller disco. Fossil puts their spin on chevron-striping in this cute clutch, with somewhat subtle seventies coloring. I’m tempted to pair her with hip-hugging bellbottoms, a ruffled button-up blouse and chunky platforms… or you could just carry her with dark wash jeans and a muted top. I can almost, kinda, sorta hazard a guess as to why Jerome Dreyfuss chose to name his creation after Igor, the cliched evil sidekick to many a fictional villain. See how the Igor shoulder bag has a tag-along zipper pouch attached to its body? It creates a little lump, no? Kind of like a little hunchback? And it’s annoying? No? Fine, maybe I’m just grasping here, but in any case, the concept behind this bag is an interesting one, certainly more interesting than some of the other styles I’ve seen lately. Dreyfuss prides himself on designing bags that are a fine balance of high function and high fashion, so it’s no surprise this comes from him.
