Spring/summer 2013 appears to be all about fine craftsmanship at Salvatore Ferragamo. The label’s team has fashioned a collection of simple, minutely detailed handbags that achieve modernity with those very same low-key elements. Maybe they don’t jump out the way some other Ferragamo designs of yesteryear do, but they speak to creative director Massimilano Giornetti’s ability to make even plain look perfect.
A plain black handbag? They’ve clearly never heard of such a thing. The Rustic Kamelia Top Handle Bag feels almost haunting thanks to a pair of involved copper buckles that punctuate the midnight backdrop with old-world elegance.
More intriguing is the Embroidered Corda Fergie Hobo, which boasts intricate top stitching on the front and smooth tonal leather on the reverse. A complex series of buckles and hardware bring this slightly dreary color to life – perhaps not enough to make it the life of the party, but certainly enough to make it more noticeable.
When in doubt, opt for a sassy bag that works overtime as a shoulder or crossbody bag. The Python Ruth Messenger Bag is by far the most impressive of the lot. Who doesn’t love the idea of aged gold studs brightening up a piece of sleek, glossy python?

Painterly flowers are always classic, but a little update never hurts. On this Overture Judith Leiber Hannah Clutch, they take a glitzy turn. This really could have gone either way, but the sequins on this shapely clutch actually work – though there’s something a wee bit granny-chic about this at the same time. Could be the print, but I like that the bag is touched up with patent leather and strong hardware to steer it in the right direction. Available for $475 at Bloomingdale’s.
Canvas, you say? I almost didn’t believe it until I took a closer peek at the Jimmy Choo Cayla Glitter-Finished Canvas Clutch, but yep – it’s made with canvas and dusted with the shimmery stuff for a truly decadent touch. In fact, it makes all the difference in the world. What would’ve been bland and blah is now electrifying, sexy and a great complement for an evening gown. Available for $1150 at Net-a-Porter.
Many trends come and go, but the graphic print is one of the most well-deserving of longevity. On this Charlotte Olympia Ipanema Printed Canvas Shopper, the vibe is that of artsy, optical-chic in the form of a complex black and white pattern (look closely and you’ll see what I mean). It’s finished with a bamboo handle, which would seem completely out of place if not for the bag’s relaxed, vacation-ready silhouette. Just call it the ultimate boardwalk companion. Available for $795 at Net-a-Porter.
Every now and then a magazine will post a list of “bag essentials” that every woman “must have” in her purse. I don’t know about you all, but I do not walk around with a sweater, glitter body spray and leggings in my purse. You’d need a freaking suitcase, right? But if you do happen to adhere to a somewhat lengthy list, you can stash it all in this supremely stylish See by Chloe Harriet Leather Tote, and no one will ever know that you’re lugging around the equivalent of a small department store. Available for $495 at Net-a-Porter.
Look, look! I found this gorgeous Valentino Garavani Large Fabric Bag and it’s very reasonably priced! This sleek tote features a textured leather with canvas two-tone pattern, studs and bow detailing, magnetic closure, a lined interior and a studded bottom. Yes, the most exciting feature is the price – grab one on sale for just $570 from Yoox.
This spring, it clearly won’t be good enough to just break out your generic, reliable yellow accessory. Nope, you’re going to need to go all out if you’re into this whole yellow thing, because the runways dictate that it’s all about really eye-popping, energetic variations of the hue. So instead of a meek mustard, try this brazen Alexander McQueen Skull Padlock Foldover Clutch. The golden skull shows its playful side this time around, hanging back against a bed of buttery soft leather. Kind of crazy, kind of practical all at once. Available for $1155 at Net-a-Porter.
Wide, candy-sweet stripes color the new Jimmy Choo Cosma Striped Clutch and bring it to life in a completely fresh way. Rather discreet despite its bold pops of neon yellow and orange, it offers an easy way to wear electric hues without looking like a traffic signal. Love the lean silhouette, which complements the brightness beautifully and gives the bag an all-grown-up appearance. Available for $1595 at Net-a-Porter.
