What are his hobbies? Is there something he usually likes to do that you could get involved in, or help out with? One of my friends is doing up a car, and his girlfriend managed to find out about a few bits that he needed to replace, and bought them, plus a case of beer. She set up the mini fridge in the garage along with an old hi fi and said 'show me how you fix this'.
She's apparently normally really girly, so this was a huge deal to him to have her chill in the garage with him like that, and she put a lot of thought into it.
