Fashion and Music

The worlds of fashion and music are eternally and indescribably intertwined. Fashion derives inspiration from music, and music is a driving force of fashion. We know all the trends of this century’s generations – bohemian, swinging, mod, punk, grunge, rock. But if we look closer and examine these developments in fashion, we see not only certain styles, but we hear certain sounds. Bohemian and swinging fashions were brought upon by the flower children and hippies of the sixties and early seventies. Soft, free-flowing and without boundaries, bohemian and swinging groupies were the fashion icons of that time, as accompanied by the music of the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and the Beatles. Mod and punk were introduced by the next set of musicians – bands like that of Ramones who first introduced to us that glamorous but cutting edge kind of dressing up. And of course we cannot deny the strong influence of grunge and rock music on our present fashion. This 90’s generation of music was front lined by Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Plaid shirts, Doc Martens and unkempt hair were a fashion - and a music statement. At present, we have the freedom of all this knowledge of fashion and music. Now more than ever, we have the choice of what to wear, and what to listen to. Now, our fashion is no longer influenced by the music of our generation since music has become too wide a genre, and fashion has become too creative a field. There is neither one style nor sound that defines our generation. Now, we have a chance to discover the music we love and the fashion we want to follow.
