Default Supermodels

As a young girl in the 1990s, I used to obsess over Kate Moss, Helena Christensen, Claudia Schiffer, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Stephanie Seymour, Bridget Hall, and the rest of the original supermodels. I was still around thirteen then so my magazine collection was still limited to YM and Seventeen. I had no access to Vogue yet. So I had to satisfy my craving for my favorite girls through my monthly dose of adolescent magazines. Sometimes I miss those days, when supermodels were bigger and more exciting than celebrities. Of course they also had their own scandals (who could forget Linda Evangelista’s I-don’t-get-out-of-bed-for-less-than-ten-thousand comment?), but they had a mysterious aura because even though they were all over because of their advertisements, they were never quite as overexposed, reckless or as tasteless as Paris Hilton or Britney Spears. They dated rock stars, Hollywood hotties or famous businessmen. They lived the Barbie life and fascinated us with their beauty and appeal. Somehow, I just don’t see that level of sophistication and elitism with our present day models, aside from a few stand outs like Gisele Bundchen.
