We started the tanning discussion a few posts back, but I was wondering if anyone ever had a problem with a tanning addiction ("tanorexia"). I think Teen Vogue had a feature on it last summer, and more and more dermatologists are seeing women coming in with major fixtations on their skin color. Has anyone ever dealt with this? What happened? And what do we think of this?
i only do tanning when im on the beach and that's only once a year or so..it's really scary to be under the sun too much because of skin cancer..i really learned to be more cautious...
That's me. I have a tanning addiction. I don't think I look good if I am my natural color. I feel unhealthy and unattractive when I don't do it. I know the risks, but tanning overall just makes me feel 100% better about everything (and puts me in a good mood).

i think you and lindsay lohan have that tanning addiction in common...hehe

I am the same way. I love tanning. Indoor tanning is alot better for you than outdoor.
Indoor tanning is no safer than outdoor. Where on earth did you hear that?
Tanning is unsafe, period. It may make you feel better that day, but a new lipstick will do the same thing and won't have you ending up with malignant melanoma.
And that doesn't even touch on the skin aging it produces.
I do a Mystic tan now and then if I am going on vacation or something. Other than that, I've pretty much successfully rejected the idea that darker skin is more attractive. There's a reason no one believes me when I tell them how old I am.
I do not tan, not ever do I try. I am as pale as they come and fear the consequences far too much.
I've had friends who were like this though. I just don't like the look, I think that a tan that is pushed beyond the normal for your colour looks fake, you just end up looking orange, especially if you tan on a bed.
If I was meant to be brown I would have been born that way.
i only tan when i am on the beach but i use hawaiian tropic the darker colored bottle to still protect my skin but even without that, i tn easily like i get really red sunburn. tanning lotions are a more safer alternative.
I'm new on this board...yes I think I have a tanning addiction! I'm 55 years old and have been tanning since I was 16-18 years old. I think there may have been 1 year I didn't tan at all. I laid in the sun from 10 in the morning until 2 or 3 in the afternoon. There were contests on who could get the darkest. And I won most of the time! Granted, there isn't a lot of sun in WV but when there was sun I was out in it! I looked forward to vacationing at the beach so I could get my "fix"...
In the last several years I am only out in the sun for 10-15 minutes. It does make me feel better and it probably does release those endorphins......I still get a deep tan even though I'm out for that short amount of time....I have light brown hair and medium colored skin.
I really wish I could get out of tanning but I love the warm feeling it gives me, even if it's only 10 minutes...I even wear a sunscreen or sunblock of 45 when I'm out and STILL tan!
I have seen the effects of all the years of tanning....uneven color, sunspots, deep wrinkles around my mouth.....
Oh well, my mom told me 40 years ago to stay out of the sun and I didn't listen.
Just venting, I guess.
I hate the sun, and I've never liked the idea of sunbeds. I use a lot of sunblock when I go out, and I quite like being pale - it suits my goth inclinations
I had colleagues who were obsessed with tanning, and I agree that it looks wrong when you do it too much. None of them have seen any adverse effects yet, but they're still quite young. I just hope they'll lose the fixation before they do any permanent damage.
