Default Smoke Alarms.

There have been two fires on my floor recently, so the fire brigade came round and fitted smoke alarms in every flat. I already had one, but now I have another one with a battery that will last 10 years, so I'm glad of that.

Sort of.

The problem is, the new one is super sensitive. If you're making burgers or sausages, anything like that - it goes off, even if they aren't smokey.

We've tried everything, opening the window, putting a fan in the kitchen, but it won't stop going off. It's glued to the ceiling, not screwed, so we can't even move it.

Has anyone else got a super sensitive smoke alarm? If so, any suggestions on ways to reduce smoke from a grill? I'm really short, and it's in an annoying place for me to reach, so basically, I can't use the grill when my husband is out, because I can't reach the smoke alarm to reset it when it goes off

I don't, but I've had one in the past. I had to replace it because it was so annoying. Good luck.

I had one-I put a sock over it :P Bad I know, but this would go off when I boiled the kettle or used the toaster! Eventually when they were inspected one year I complained and the dude tested it. Turned out it was in the wrong place for a start-right over the oven, but it was set at the wrong temp. It was a heat alarm, not a smoke alarm, and was going off at 65 degrees c, hence the kettle setting it off.

Have it checked, it really might be faulty.

Thanks for the comments. I will most certainly be giving them a call!

Yesterday I was cooking a bigger meal than normal, and we had to use the grill / oven part as an oven. This hardly ever gets used, and I hadn't noticed there were lots of crumbs on the bottom from the morning toast.

The crumbs burned in no time and put out tons of smoke - it wasn't a serious fire or anything, but that 'cough, splutter, eye-water' type smoke - not a peep from the smoke alarm.

That really inspires confidence.
