Default Anyone know about vacuums?

This is kind of boring, but I thought that maybe you guys would still have some good advice. Does anyone know anything about buying a vacuum cleaner? They are bigger investments that I realized. I think the Oreck Ultra Xl looks like a good one, but I have no idea. What do you guys have?

I've never used one, but Dyson's vacuum cleaners are very appealing. I really want a Slim or an Animal

I have an Oreck and absolutely love it. I noticed a huge difference the first time I used it. It's a bit expensive in my opinion, but definitely worth it.

orecks are definitely the best brand you can buy. they last forever.so althought you will be spending a lot of money on it, they will last and they fix it if it ever gets broken. i myself got a cheap bissil from wal mart for a quick fix, it's not the best, but it works okay

Thanks for the advice, ladies! My mom has said the same thing about Orecks- she said one you have one, you have it for life. Apparently the company has really great CS and will give you a loaner if yours needs to be repaired.

I have a problem buying an expensive vaccum or I had anyway. I kept buying the cheap ones and they kept breaking on me so I eventually got a nice Hoover which to me is the best vaccum to get. I have never heard of a Dyson.

I agree with you and I got myself a $50.00 Bissil vacuum cleaner at Wal Mart too! I want to get the new Bissil Pet Hair Eraser Vacuum next!

I don't have a vacuum cause I have hardwood floors but if I had carpet and needed a vacuum I would by a dyson cause you don't have to be bothered with a bag.

I used to think the same thing about the bagless vacuums, but then I learned that they are actually kind of ineffective. Apparently, when you empty the canister and dump it into the garbage, some of the dust and dirt that was vacuumed up gets redistributed in the air and settles back on the floor. That grosses me out a little bit, so I think I will be happiest with a bag vacuum.

We bought a big brand name vacuum cleaner from Wal*Mart, and it died in a few weeks. I forget the brand, but it wasn't designed to pick up pet hair.

Since then, we've learned that Miele makes vacuum cleaners specifically for homes with pets, so we'll probably be checking that brand out.

Good luck.

Update: I'm still obsessed with Dysons, and I think I'm going to take the money I make working this summer to get one. I've read some REALLY good things about them. If anybody's interested... here's a link to one review page Dyson Animal Vacuum Review

I know that regular vacuums aren't designed to be able to handle large amounts of fibers. For example, you aren't supposed to use a regular vacuum on brand new carpet because they can't handle all of the extra fibers that are on new carpeting. I guess it could possibly be the same if there is a significant amount of pet hair. I've never heard of Miele, but I would definitely go with a brand/company that offers a good warranty and servicing, like Oreck.

We bought a dyson animal a few years back and let me tell you, it's wonderful. When my husbands vaccuum died and we needed to find a replacement, I was reccomended a dyson by my sister in law and it's absolutley one of the best investments we've made. The first time I vaccuumed with it on our carpet, I actually was able to pick up saw dust around the edges of the carpet from when the house was built! My hubby usually has really bad allergies from our two dogs (a cocker spaniel and short haired mix) but he hasn't had any issues since we bought our new vaccuum (the washable hepa filter that comes with animal dyson really makes a difference). Also, I saw that someone further up on this post said they didn't prefer a bagless vaccuum because it was a pain to get all the junk out of the canister without making a bg mess; let me say that what I do is take the canister straight out to the dumpster and beat the thing until all the dust comes out. Another thing to consider with a bagless is that you can wash out ALL the filters, I have literally taken the hose to my dyson! With the bagged vaccuums, think of all the dust that accumulates in the filters that cirrculate dust back into the air! Honestly, I am in love with my dyson and I would reccomend it to everyone (I swear I don't work for thier marketing department!)

I recently bought a Kenmore cannister. I absolutely love it. It is a very pretty light red color.

Lucky girl! I am on my way home tonight to do a ton of housework. I have to break out the Oreck to do some vacuuming and clean the bathroom from top to bottom. I have a friend coming to stay tomorrow night, so everything needs to be really clean and I'm embarrassed to admit that I haven't cleaned for the past couple weeks. I was so busy studying for the LSAT that I just didn't have time.
