New York Fashion Week Runway Report: Marc Jacobs
By: Erin D.
Think “Annie Hall pulls it together and goes to Europe,” and you’ve got the gist of Marc Jacobs’ fall ready-to-wear collection. The 1970s clearly made a big impact on Jacobs, who showed several pantsuits with long collars, wide-brimmed hats, vests, tuxedo jackets, and belted cardigan sets in fall’s rich hues. But there was also a whiff of the 1920s, seen in the flapper-style hats and long, straight-as-a-board belted dresses that recalled a chic version of Olive Oyl. Everything was mature and very trim - no wide-legged trousers here. The dressier pieces - primarily in black - carried a mysterious femme fatale vibe and had just the right balance of unfussiness and high-fashion. Jacobs could have done away with the multicolored sequins at the end, but overall this was a smart, sleek collection.
