New York Fashion Week Runway Report: Matthew Williamson
By: Erin D.

British designer
Matthew Williamson may be the darling of
London’s fashionistas, but there were just a handful of wearable pieces in the bizarre ready-to-wear collection he showed at
New York City’s Fashion Week. There was the good: Sienna Miller-esque short sleeved minidresses and two silky candy-coated beaded
party dresses in eye-popping shades of blue and lime. There was the bad: Grace Jones-style
hoods, pleated gold
foil skirts,
blouses that could double as the stained glass windows in a church, heavy-handed
Mondrian prints, you name it. And there was the ugly (and lots of it): silky
turtleneck frocks that ballooned out at the arms (think Cher meets Fruit of the Loom mascot),
ponchos that looked like a Lite Brite had exploded on them, and an unforgiveable amount of sequins. Williamson went overboard with his use of bold prints, and turned his back on a major rule: less is more.
