New York Fashion Week Runway Report: Derek Lam

Derek Lam is still, on the grand scale of things, a fairly young designer, but his fall ready-to-wear collection held its own against the Diane von Furstenbergs and DKNYs. Highlights included a soft gray sweater (Jennifer Beals meets 2007) cinched with a black leather belt and worn with a white short skirt; a sleeveless buttoned (with pockets, natch) navy belted dress; a flirty dark gray dress with a bustier-style top; and a metallic top paired with a ballerina-like chiffon skirt in a moth-brown hue. There were lots of skinny, skinny pants and checker prints as well. Young fashion-forward urbanites will eat it up.
