Pursepage at NY Fashion Week: L.A.M.B. Spring 2008 Collection
By: Mariana L.

8pm, Wednesday at the main tent,
Bryant Park
This is a pop star’s collection. The
L.A.M.B. collection shown here in the cavernous big tent at
Bryant park was clearly inspired by
Gwen Stefani’s performing lifestyle, her favorite music, and her fashion idols. The soundtrack was a mix of Ska, New Wave, some 80’s favorites and the clothing on the runway was styled perfectly styled for that. You can see the retro influences, but updated thoroughly in the ensembles here. Lots of saucy tartans and tweeds, with some tongue-in-cheek schoolgirl silhouettes. They might be the high school cheerleader or prom looks you remember, but done in a much sexier and edgier way. There are also some optic, 60’s inspired black and white prints, and some classic houndstooth patterns re-interpreted in different size scales, sometimes in all sequins. The same funky patterns were also projected on big screens behind the models as they walked the runway, though they didn’t really need them, each outfit was eye-popping enough…
The front row was a round-up of her music-industry supporters, and some of my favorite divas,
Eve and
Shirley Manson of Garbage. Less famous, but certainly no less important, were
Gwen Stefani’s parents, also in the front to show her support. The star of the evening also brought out her little one during the final bow, (and being a good parent, she put earphones on him to protect him from the loud noise).
Handbags? The silhouettes might remind you of the big bookbags you had as a kid, and cylindrical side slung
purses you might have carried your candy in, but with much funkier graphics and more luxurious materials.
