For me it's about the cut, the style, the quality and the legacy. When you can look at a garment and say Thats Chloe because you recognize the style. When it's generic looking and not interesting to look at, that to me isn't designer.

I agree. Designer clothes should be detailed and unique (never something one can get anywhere, but more expensive), and bags should have some class (even if a bit kitsch to some people) and stand out. I don't consider any brand that really copies to be designer, like the two bags by BCBG Max Azria I liked, and later didn't, were actually copies of Paddingtons, but no lock. Heh.
I think Baby Phat is probably more luxury for urban style. It's too "every person" and accessible, but for a certain type of person.
Now what about Marc by Marc Jacobs? I'm torn because it's Marc Jacobs, sort of, and I've liked at least one bag, but mostly the bags are simple and not luxuriously made. On the other hand I do like the clothes, and the clothes aren't cheap. I think the clothes follow behind the main line MUCH more than the bags, but of course the bags can't, unfortunately, look like MJ.
