Does anyone have a hamster? If so are they really hard to keep up with. My 11 year old would like one for Christmas and we are considering it. However, we want to get more information on them.
My sister and I had hamsters when we were younger. We loved them. They aren't hard to keep up with at all, they are actually really fun and inexpensive. Just have to completely clean the cage at least every couple of weeks.
For your child to really enjoy them, I would get a nice cage for it with tubes and a wheel and stuff. That is more entertaining for an 11 y/o than just looking into a glass cage at it.
Yeah, I have heard that you should get the ball for the hamster to run around in the house. As well that you should put wheels and tubes so that way the hamster doesn't get bored.
I tried taking care of a hamster when I was a kid but I'm just no good at taking such small animals. I've always been scared I'd squish 'em little critters to death!

i hope that your son/daughter got one for christmas! they are cute and very easy to take care of! the only thing is that they don't live that long... i had 2.. then 3.. then 4... haha and they were the best.
I love hamsters.Mine died a week before Christmas. Her name was Squeaks, and I adopted her from a small pet rescue. She was 9 months old when we got her.The previous owner had boys that didn't treat her very well.I was surprised that she was as tame as she was.
Hamsters have a life span of 3 years. We got 3 great years out of her.My heart is still broken because I miss her.
Hamsters are my favorite pocket pet.Very easy to care for.But if you get a hamster...try Petfinders.com.They usually have small pocket pets that need loving homes.
Some hamsters can live longer but that is the rarity. I had one little fella who at one year old was joined in the house by a girl. She died at three, and on he lived. He got to looking more and more arthritic, but lived on. We replaced the female, and another two years passed before he died.
And they are VERY easy to care for, so long as you are willing to clean the cage.
I have to admit, I've never had any luck at all with hamsters, no matter what I did. The longest I could ever keep one alive was nine months, the shortest was two days (although I'm pretty sure that one must have been sick when I brought her home from the pet store). I finally just decided that hamster-keeping is not one of my strong suits, though I love watching other people's hamsters.
