Default Do you brush your pet's teeth?

I was told I should but I'm not sure it's necessary. How important is it and how come I've never heard of this practice before?

Yes, I do. I brush their teeth once or twice a week, not everday.

My vet said that it's important to brush dog's teeth to prevent oral diseases.

NO, but I have some mouthwash stuff I put in their water. It really freshens their breath, and is good for their teeth. I have kitties by the way

What kind of mouthwash stuff do you put in the water? I am very interested in hearing about that. My cats would claw me to pieces if I tried to brush their teeth, maybe if I had started when they were kittens..

I have cats, and frankly I cannot imagine the carnage if I would try to actually brush their teeth. I suppose if I had started this from the time they were kittens, it might have worked. I do use a mouthwash product that goes in their water, and generally give them dry food which is also good for their teeth.

Instead of brushing my cat's teeth I feed it special 'treats' that come with anti-tartar control formulas. These work quite well.

No, I never have, but I feed mostly dry food. My vet said his teeth look fine.

I do brush Fluffeys teethbut she don't like it! usually I have to tape up her legs with duct tape to keep her from scratching me, then I have to put a small stick in the back of her mouth to keep her brom biting. She hated it to begin with, but has seemed to have gotten used to it lately. The worst part is taking off the duct tape. Cats HATE duct tape!

my vet recently told me that my pedigree toy would need a "dental" and handed me a quote for $375 I handed the page back to the sweet little bleating heart and softly reminded her (since there was a roomful of animal lovers in the waiting area who may have mobbed me). "He's a dog ma'am". and I promptly left the building with the little fellow under one arm and a coach from the other

Now don't be like that dear everyone knows that unless your dog weighs more than 85lbs you just don't spend any money on it

Well as you know, I'm a rich woman but it's something I'm passionate about... Abuse of single women pet owners in Veteranary hospitals. It's like they have an association for marketing and shaming us all into frivolous charges during our veteranary visits.

I am reviving this thread because merdies story about the rat at the vet made me laugh.

I don't trust many vets or their practices, so I'd love to be a fly on the wall when someone brings a rat and a cat into the vet.

ok...i have 2 dog's...my eldest recently had to have 5 teeth removed because I assumed those anti tarter treats were enough...it cost me 60 bucks per tooth and 300 for the actual procedure...PLEASE bush your babies' teeth!...I'm more careful with my puppy now and I brush my older dog's teeth twice a week now to save costs on his yearly cleaning!

Default pet dental

I am new to the blog, I am a cat owner. We have four of them. Last year my little boy was diagnosed with Diabetes, he is tied to insulin for pretty much the rest of his life. With this he developed periodontal disease we had to extract 3 and he was missing 2. My 2 other cats had major gingivitis, they all had to go under and have there teeth cleaned. It was the best treatment I could have done, they all are more energetic and lively. They were in some pain from there bad teeth. I would reccommend anyone with animals to try to brush thir teeth and also give them treats that helpfight plaque. If it is not possibleto brush their teeth please visit your local vet for further instruction.

My little Jack Russell has dragon breath (I adopted him and whom ever had him before I did must have fed him garbage dog food)! He has had his teeth cleaned before and it cost over $500! Its a weird thing... We seem to have no problem dropping 800+ on a bag or a new piece of furniture but when it comes to a member of our family we cringe at the thought of paying for medical treatment. You know what I mean?

Please everyone get your babies teeth cleaned!

Well, I have birds and horses.
Birds don't have teeth.
A horse doesn't need it's teeth brushed, just floated now and then.

My mom has a toy yorkie. He gets his teeth brushed once a week. Of course, his groceries each week cost more than most peoples. I'm not saying he's spoiled, but....ok, I will say. He's spoiled.

I've heard of brushing your pets teeth, but I never see my parents brushing my dogs teeth.

I always heard dogs had cleaner mouths than humans?

We brush our dogs' teeth about once a week or so. We also check their teeth almost every day and make sure they have something to chew on that will help clean their teeth up when they need it.
