I was once only a cat-lover but now I'm both.
For the longest time, I've grown up with and had a cat in the house, apartment, wherever. They're very low-maintenance and you can even leave them for a few days with large dispensers of water and food and clean litter boxes.
My husband and I had two cats for awhile and it can be tough because our newer cat doesn't cover his poop very well which makes the finicky prissy one upset and then she poops outside the box.
Then we got a cute puppy (cavalier king charles spaniel) and all hell broke loose! I thought potty training a puppy would only take 2 - 3 weeks max... wrong! Ours also loved to mark his territory in the house and then the cats did the same - what a nightmare. For awhile, we regretted getting the dog and I proclaimed myself a Non-Lover of Dogs.
Good news is that after our pup turned 1.5, we got him neutered, installed a cat door for food and litter in the basement, put up some gates and got more disciplined about sending the dog outside when he sat near the back door. Also, we have to be home by a certain time to feed and let the dog out to do his business. There's a lot more training involved with dogs... they're a lot more like children and need discipline, I guess.
Now we absolutely love our dog - especially my young kids - he's a fun and happy lap-dog type who fetches and is so loving. Our cats are opposite - one will come when she feels like it, the other is also like a puppy who will come when called and is very affectionate. So I guess I'm both a cat and dog lover now.
As for our fish - I love them too and fortunately my husband cleans the tank every 2 weeks or so.
