Default House training a puppy

Hi Everyone,

I got a puppy for Christmas, a little Pug. He has been taking up a lot of my time. I just love him to death!

I was wondering if anyone has any house training tips for me. I am trying to teach him to go in his crate (that is the only time he is ever in there), but when I put him in, he acts almost like I am punishing him and will hold it until he gets out and then go on the floor. I am at a loss as to what to do here.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

you have to walk outside with puppies a lot. (very short walks tough) But he can't hold it up yet, so just go outside a lot. He will get used to do it outside.

If he grows up and is over the time that he should be potty trained, and he still isn't, be a little more harsh. When he pees on the floor push is nose in his own pee. This maybe sounds really harsh, but you are the boss. And he will not hate you for it. This works better than saying "bad dog" , because he maybe doesn;t understand why he is bad. Especially if he peed there 30 minutes ago. But this way it's pretty clear what you mean.

And if the dog goes to the door and sits there (sometimes they do very sneaky), go outside with him! Don't wait untill you finished reading that page, or for the commercials on tv. If he gets older he can be more patient of course.

Check out the dog training books by the Monks of New Skete. They are really incredible. The books tell you everything you need to know about raising a dog, and presumably they include this.

If he also sleeps in his crate, animals won't releave themselves where they sleep. In the book "Raising Rover", they said to take the puppy outside every 20 minutes and tell the dog to "pee" or whatever your chosen word is and then praise the dog when she/he does go. You can train the dog to go pee on command, just be sure you use the same word every time. The "Raising Rover" book is a fabulous book for learning how to train your dog and it also explains why animals do the things they do. Good Luck - he's definitely worth the effort! (Love to see a picture of the pup, I bet he's too cute for words!)
