Default City Animal

I want to get a pet (namely, a cat or a dog), but I live in a TEENY TINY apartment in New York? Is it wrong to coop an animal up all day in a little apartment? If I did get a pet, how could I nurture it best so it's not lonely?

honestly? i don't recommend a dog or a cat..it would be pretty selfish of you since they would live happier in a bigger place where they can frolick and can be showered attention upon...i think they would be lonely in ur apartment..wat about a fish?

A cat is possible... altough it's better if they go outside sometimes, many people lock them up in their houses. But you have to make some room for the cat. A pillow, or something else soft where he can sleep, a few toys (so he doesn't ruin your stuff), a thing to scratch his nails and a "cat bathroom".

All these things can take up a lot of space in a tiny apartment.

And if you live there alone and have to go to work... he will be alone way too much.

A fish, hamster, lizzard, turtle or bird would be a better idea.

I agree with kitsch_k and nancy_kelpie...

Its not fair to a dog or cat to keep them locked up all day. Dogs need at least 45 minutes of exercise and both cats and dogs need fresh air. If you don't take a dog out much, he/she might get upset and will pee everywhere on purpose to get back at you! I've never owned a cat but I do know it takes a lot of time and patience to raise and train a puppy.

Fish would be a better choice.

Let us know what you decide!

You might be better off getting an aquarium and some tropical fish.

If you work a 9-5 job, and have extra money, you can hire a sitter, to come in and walk a dog. But you'd have to walk the dog, morning and evening. A Pug is the perfect city dog...a real lap dog, doesn't require alot of space. Cats are easier...litter box. Some never go out because people de-claw them. I've had Guinea Pigs...they are cute and live in a cage. But you've got to handle them, really guite smart. Good luck

Default cat would be best

I think a cat would be best, be sure to get it as a kitten.
I have 2 that stay indoors entirely, since we live out
in the country and have coyote problems.
I have a ledge built under 2 windows, so they can lay
and look out the window with the screen raised
just a little. I also grow a small tub of indoor grass,
since that is one of the things they crave.

Cats can be alright in a small space, as long as you allow them some time to run around the apartment, or give them come kind of exercise.
