Valentino Sweetheart Bag
By: Mariana L.

I don’t take this
handbag, (nor much else) at face value. This bag is called the
Valentino’s ‘Sweetheart’, but I do not find it naive, sweet or as romantic as the name implies. I may be interpreting too much out of this bag, but I find the ’sweetheart’ name almost ironic. Yes, the richly grained red leather evokes a color of passion. However, are the extra, non-functional, almost excessive leather details on the link portion of the handle meant to emphasize the “chain” part of ‘chains of love’? Does the additional detail at the center of the flap look like a tongue sticking out at you? The not-so-delicate running stitch detailing reminds me of the stitches one might get at a hospital. Is this meant to symbolize a once broken heart whose pieces have been put back together? If any culture knows the drama of love, it would be Italy, this
purse’s home.
