Default Mammogram

At what age should a woman get a breast Mammogram? I am 33 and I am thinking that I should get one done. My mother had a biopsy when she was at the age of 30 because they found a lump. However, it was just a cyst so I am scared and think I need to get one done.

I have never heard of an ultrasound mammogram. I will have to see if they offer that through my doctor. I have only heard about the one that you stand and but them on a bar or something to that effect. Thanks for the advice.

Never heard of that one either. I've never had a mammogram, since ultrasound works for me, I've had 3 benign cysts taken already. And they say that if you have small breasts, it's not that much painful when you have mammogram.

You should have that as soon as possible to prevent effects that may be negative in the future

Ultrasounds are better for women under 35, because younger breast tissue is denser and harder to see abnormalities on a mammogram.

For the general population (women who have no family history of breast cancer), women are encouraged to get a baseline (first) mammogram at age 35. But definitely point out any lumps or sudden changes in the look of your breast (dimpling, etc.) to your OB/GYN as soon as possible.

I speak from experience. My cancer was found on a mammogram at age 33 (I am the fourth generation in my family to have breast cancer), but I'm 35 now and am healthy, thanks to that mammogram and ultrasound.

I also had the ultrasound of my breast at age 21 because they found a lump. It was benign. I am just worried because breast cancer is high in our family.

I would definitely talk to your doctor and see what he/she recommends.

I am starting to feel like mammagrams should just be part of every woman's visit to the gyno. It seems like younger and younger women are finding lumps in their breasts--as young as 18! Do you think this has anything to do with our society's collective declining health?

Declining health, preservatives in the food we eat, I think are contributing factors.

I've never had a mammogram but I have had check ups by my midwife at my yearly pap smear visit. There is no history of early breast cancer in my family; not before the age of 80, so I will wait for the baseline at 35.
