It’s Earth Day!
Every year we celebrate Earth Day and this year it falls on April 22nd. The theme this year is A Billion Acts of Green, a campaign to “generate a billion acts of environmental service and advocacy before Rio +20.” Rio +20 refers to the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development which will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2012 between June 4-6.
But more and more people are making efforts on a regular basis to be more green. What can you do to help? How about recycling your own handbags by passing them along to family and friends who have always admired them? You could donate favorite purses that you really don’t use anymore to a shelter that helps disadvantaged or abused women get back on their feet and into the workplace again.
When it comes down to buying new purses, check out places like uncommon goods. Specializing in items that are “anything but ordinary,” they focus on handmade and recycled goods that you can easily incorporate into your everyday life. Check out these interesting bags.
You won’t have to brown bag it anymore once you snag a colorful Rice Sack Lunch Bag. When you purchase one of these lovely lunch bags, you are keeping another rice sack from hitting already overloaded landfills, and you’re also supporting an artist and getting a one-of-a-kind insulated carrier that you can fill with your own healthy meals. Each bag is $27 – you may want to pick up a few for future gifts!
You won’t get tired of these Recycled Rubber Purses when you see how much attention they draw. Made from actual recycled tires from landfills, each purse has its own signature style. The larger one actually has seatbelts for straps and the smaller one uses Army green twill tape. The bags sell for $99 and as uncommon goods suggests, “buy two, because everyone needs to have a spare tire.”
Here’s a real conversation starter – Mosquito Net iPad Carrying Cases. Functional and eco-friendly, these shoulder bags are made in Cambodia using repurposed mosquito netting. Three interior pockets and two on the outside provide plenty of room for your cell phone, keys and wallet. Choose from grey or orange, each $45.posted: April 22nd, 2011
