I lost interest in Balenciaga a long, long time ago, right around the time of the City bag’s major heyday. Though the label never fails to design products that are designed well and constructed with careful thought, they also haven’t really caught onto the fact that, every now and then, people crave a little variety in their lives. I mean, really, just how many tasseled motorcycle bags does a woman need?

However, I’m not quite sure they’re on the right path with the Edition Ottoman Dupionne Tote, either. What is going on here? This egg-like thing is one of the least glamorous bags ever. There’s a whole lot of canvas on it, amplified by a little blue leather to, er, shake things up, I guess. I can see the mod influence in the round handle and even in the unusual shape, but the end result is more of the same: snooze. Okay, I am sure that Balenciaga did not plan this, but if you spell out the 26 letters that make up the words Balenciaga Daim Alphabet Tote and put it to the tune of the alphabet song, it all comes together pretty nicely and rhymes perfectly. (Yep, I sang it. Twice. Problem?) However, a sick beat isn’t enough to sell this suede carryall, which is otherwise just kind of goofy and reminds me a bit of those bags teachers use to hold their supplies. I don’t know…would you pay $1795 for it? Find it at Barneys.

Is it just me, or does this Balenciaga Arena Tri-Color City Classic Bag remind you of Rainbow Bright? Don’t get me wrong, I love Rainbow Bright and all, but I just don’t know that she pairs all that well with designer handbags. This purse is extremely well made, the wrinkled lambskin is flawless, and its rolled leather handles and aged brass hardware are not only sturdy, but preferable for ultimate durability. I don’t think I’ve ever been on the fence about something Balenciaga-related. I generally love the brand’s bags, shoes, wallets. . . .basically everything. But I just really don’t know what to make of this Balenciaga Malaga Continental Wallet. Do I hate it because it’s probably really hideous and I wouldn’t give it another glance if it weren’t made by Balenciaga? Or do I secretly love it in that way that we all sort of love Chinese Cresteds, even though one inevitably wins the Ugliest Dog Alive award every year? Word on the street is that Nicole Richie will launch a handbag line through her House of Harlow 1960 label come next spring.
