This handbag looks like it might get up and fly away. The two little points on the sides are just not working. Maybe they are ears? They take away from how supple the white leather is. The buckles on the sides and the detail at the opening are all this bag would need to be fabulous. The ear-wings are just too much and take away from how gorgeous this bag could be without them. This Fendi bag looks like something you would pick up at a tourist shop in Arizona and not something that you would drop almost three grand for. The color is garish and looks cheap. The genuine stone adornmnets scream D.I.Y. and not deisgner. And the front has “wolf fish skin” detailing. What exactly is a wolf fish? Do I even want to know? Whatever it is, I am sure PETA would not approve. The shape of the bag is cute, and the strap gives it functionality like the other Fendi Secret Code bags, but I think this one is a big miss. Truth be told, I’ve always found Fendi’s “To You” style to be one of the label’s weaker offspring. But - color me surprised! - I’m strangely drawn to this new Metallic version, which features a very “Less Than Zero”-ish gleaming mirrored silver frame and a sparkling metallic-flecked goatskin body. Subtle it’s not, but since when has Fendi been subtle? I dig the unabashed extravagance of it all, which makes it a diva-destined purse ideal for big nights out. Available for $1,170 at Barneys.com.

Despite the fact that it’s been quite a while since I’ve been genuinely impressed by anything Fendi-created, I’m willing to let bygones be bygones in light of the appearance of the label’s Metallic Leather Bag. In a word, it’s gorgeous. Gleaming bronze leather will always stand out in a crowd of basic golds and silvers, no matter how glamorous those may be. This, though, has an impressive understated side to its elegance, making it ideal to carry no matter what time of day it is. Not many metallic purses pass the day-to-evening transition test, so this lovely Fendi earns points from me. Available for $2090 at Browns Fashion.

My sources lurking under Anna Wintour’s four-poster bed tell me that jewel tones are gonna hit it big as a fall fashion trend, so wise up to these color-saturated purses. Though I’m a sucker for a nice edgy black patent version, the Yves Saint Laurent instant-classic Tribute Tote in turquoise has me reaching for the ol’ credit card. Fendi’s ruby-red Satin Forever Clutch is a jewel of the Nile I can’t deny-al. I also love the captivating sapphire hue (so hot with a LBD) of VBH’s Alligator Compact Clutch and the rich peacock suede of Valentino’s Maison Studded Tote. Now if only they came with actual jewels…

Grannys everywhere, rejoice: this Fendi Vintage Leather Baguette has your name written all over it. The old-fashioned structure is a throwback to the ladylike styles of the ’50s, very quiet and unfussy with minimal detail and only a touch of hardware. Of course, a little update is necessary to appeal to today’s modern woman, and it’s found here in the form of a very slim chain handle. The mauve shade is nice and very in tune with the bag’s overall understated quality. Available for $1590 at eLuxury (that price is definitely not vintage).

Uh oh. Is Speidi about to become…Spy-di? After waving her Hermes bags all over Hollywood, Heidi Montag, that “Hills” gal you love to hate, has turned her eye to the Fendi Spy (and, if my eyes aren’t failing me, it looks like she’s already got an electric-blue Chanel purse on her arm already). Seriously - does Brent Bolthouse pay this girl to play with designer purses at LA boutiques? (And is he hiring?) And does seeing Heidi carrying these covetable big-name bags lessen their appeal in your eyes?

I know the Fendi Spy craze has died down quite a bit, but I still love and collect them. If you’re looking for your first Spy, I would not suggest hitting eBay, simply because most Spies offered there are counterfeit. Spies, however, have many points of authentication and a seasoned Spy collector will be able to tell, right of the bat in most cases, which ones are real and which are fake. This one, for instance, is authentic. It’s a rarer Spy because it’s a first season Spy, made in the color Bone, and is not a permanent collection color. Even the leather is different than the Spies at retail now — it is untreated, uncoated and therefore ridiculously soft. It’s also unlike current Spies in that the hide is much smoother and less bubbly, as Spy lovers like myself call the nooks and crannies of the Spy nappa. This particular auction ends in about 2 days, and bidding is still only at $255. If bidding stays low, you may be able to walk off with this Spy at a fraction of its $2,300 retail. Note, however, that this Spy is missing its Spy compartment cover.
