If pressed, I would have to concede that I’m not much of a Gucci gal. I’ve only been persuaded to sink some change at Gucci twice: a trim, messenger style bag and the ubiquitous Walker monogrammed pouch made famous by Ms. Carrie Bradshaw. Having grown completely away from the monogrammed items in recent years, Gucci has not caught my eye with their offerings. But that all changed upon seeing the Large Jockey Python Hobo Bag. My first reaction to this bag: delicious! The clean, refined lines appeal to my urban, minimalist taste. The curves created by the slouch of the python add a feminine note, a nice contrast to the bad-girl appeal of the pitch-black python. This Gucci strikes that fine balance between rich and subdued. But rich, you will have to be indeed! The price tag is a steep $3,295 at Saks, on pre-order to be shipped in November. Still, for such a classic purse, I may have to put it on my short list.

Gucci.com and boutique stores nationwide are now into phase 2 of markdowns. This means big, big savings and makes the luxury Italian label, dare I say it, affordable? Flats under $200 (same priced you’d pay for the Tory Burch Revas), and large leather handbags at the $600 mark are not the norm when it comes to Gucci, so give your SA a ring, or yourself to a store STAT!

The Gucci online presale has started, so get in early and land a bag. Gucci is pretty generous with first cuts, so I suggest getting what your little handbag lovin’ heart desires now instead of waiting for another markdown. Yes, I have witnessed mind blowing savings with second markdowns, but this isn’t something that always happens. There isn’t a ton of selection at gucci.com, but you can always call your boutique store for more info on what’s on sale.

Now this is in-store for all Gucci boutiques in North America. I know it has worked at the Toronto Gucci boutique, as well as several in the States, but I am not sure how (or when) the sales work overseas.

That said, May 20th kicks off the pre-sale at Gucci! All sale items for summer will be available to peruse and purchase. Now don’t get too excited because you aren’t able to take your purchases home until June 3rd, when the actual sale begins. The pre-sale is available for anyone who goes in and asks (preferrably a member of management) to see what is on “pre-sale.” At this point, you can browse through merchandise (or a large book, stating all sale information), and shop at your own pace. Typically, things are marked down 30-40% in this first markdown, but after this it’s pretty slim pickins’, so I’d strike while the iron is hot. Expect all S/S 2008 handbags to go down, as well as shoes and clothing.

To find out more, inquire at your nearest Gucci boutique. Remember this is for freestanding stores only…not leased departments at Saks or Neimans.

It’s like utter mayhem over at Gucci, where adventurous, unexpected handbags seem to be appearing all the time nowadays. This take on the Hysteria Hobo is especially interesting, with a yellow, white and gray color motif over black leather. The effect is pretty striking, though I’m not sure I like it much. What is that supposed to be? The large gold hardware on the top sides are also a little too much in combination with the colors - it’s all overkill, and I wouldn’t want to carry this anywhere. So Gucci is milking the Hysteria collection for all it’s worth. While designers continue to crank out a bevy of handbags each season, certain houses understand how one style of a particular collection can just stick unlike anything else, and when this happens, the It bag is born. Increasing their chances of having a hit, designers are creating 5+ styles of a certain collection to ensure that at least one “hooks” a starlet, and thus the public. The result is more Hysteria (literally and figuratively), and this time it’s got a great removable strap for those of us on the go. I think the black patent version is a winner (it’s also available in dark silver), and works well with spring’s acid brights. Don’t be afraid of mixing this bag with light textures and frothy colors; spring is all about mixing it up! Now that Lindsay has checked out of her extended stay at the rehab facilities, she’s working hard to get her career back on track. After her much talked about Marilyn pictorial, Lindsay’s putting in as much face time around town as possible. And that means having pre-party dinner with her mom, Dina, at The Spotted Pig in Manhattan’s West Village. Dina, now the blonde of the duo, sported an 85th Anniversary Edition Gucci Boston bag. This bag was released Fall of 2006 to commemorate Gucci’s 85th birthday, in a variety of colors; Dina’s is the cream version. You won’t find this particular bag for retail anymore but if you did pick one up at the release, it was to the tune of about $2,400.

The Gucci Hysteria Large Top Handle Bag is a massive bag, but it’s so big and squishy that I’m almost eager to suggest it as one of spring’s It bags. Spring 2008 is all about super large or super small, and nothing in between, so this huge bag has plenty of space to make a name for itself this season. Available in dark silver at saks.com, the bag retails for $2,395. I love the softness of this metallic handbag, and the Gucci Hysteria metal crests on either side of the the handles is a great touch. The body pleats and side ruching really give the purse a mix of masculine and feminine details that look great with work or play clothes. The neutral metallic will also span seasons to come.

Oh, jeez. I am loving this Gucci handbag! I’m not sure why, but with the right outfit, I would rock the heck out of this purse and then some. The bright white monogram is perfect and fresh for spring, while the combination of bright green and black stripes make the bag something to look at. It isn’t often that we see such stark colors on a bag, so this one is a winner. I could do without the loud “Gucci” written in script across the front of the bag, but the rest is working, so if you’re an avid sneaker collector (a pair of green/black/white Dunks would be glorious with this bag) and can get away with this bag, go for it! The timid need not apply. The Gucci Joy Medium Boston bag retails for $640 and is available at saks.com.
