One of my absolute favorite runway looks of spring 2011 was the Gucci Malika clutch. This version, the Malika Metallic Python Clutch, is especially exotic, what with its spicy, fiery orange hue, its silky cords, and its hints of fringe. While this doesn’t effectively put a stop to those banal evening clutches that blend into the crowd (not everyone can drop this kind of cash on a bag, after all), it does offer women another option for their nights out. Yes, even country stars like Tammy Wynette were slaves to the famous fashion of the eighties. Tammy’s is that fairytale story of fame: an innocent farm girl faces rejection time and time again, then moves to Nashville despite her letdowns and thankfully is discovered by a record producer who changes her name and makes her famous. That’s not to say however, that this Country Music Hall of Famer didn’t earn her place and title as the First Lady of Country Music. Tammy launched a string of Top Ten hits and earned multiple Grammy Awards and nominations, as well as multiple other awards and honors. Aside from her music, Tammy also designed and sold her own line of jewelry and was the mother of four children. She died in her home in Nashville, Tennessee on April 6, 1998, but to this day, she is one of country music’s biggest-selling female vocalists. It’s rare that I find reason or occasion to write about Gucci bags these days. I just don’t feel the love. Nice? Yes. Kind of boring sometimes? Yeah, most of the time, actually. Good thing spring 2011 has brought with it some changes in the form of exotic. The label’s Python Shoulder Bag would be a most unwelcome sight if, say, it were the actual thing and it slithered unexpectedly across the floor. I don’t even want to think of the state my life would be in if I succumbed to all of my recent Gucci obsessions. They’ve come out of nowhere, at light speed, but to my credit I haven’t bought even one. If I were to splurge, it would likely be on this New Bamboo Canvas and Leather Tote, an incredibly practical yet highly unique carryall. I’d hesitate to call it a tote – it’s more of a satchel, isn’t it? – but it’s definitely worthy of every laudatory word in the book. If you’re looking for something seriously bright to make your LBD pop, there’s no way you can go wrong with this Gucci Malika Evening Bag in orange laminated python. People will spot your purse a mile away, and forgetting it on a table will be nearly impossible.
