It’s hard for me to decide whether sunglasses or purses are my favorite accessories, so of course I’m smitten with the Marc Jacobs What a Spectacle Beach Tote. This coated cotton canvas bag is sturdy enough for a summer at the beach, but I might just carry it all over town – with at least two pairs of shades inside! Available at Piperlime for $248.

You have no reasons not to look absolutely chic at all times, even when you’re just running out the door in a thoughtless ensemble to drop off dry cleaning and grab a carton of OJ. This Marc by Marc Jacobs Packable Shopper is a super cute, grab-and-go type of bag made of PVC. It’s extremely relaxed, yet still manages to lend any look a certain charm thanks to its double-sided design. One side shows off a wall of classic stripes, while the other is coated in hearts. Cute! Available for just $68 at Nordstrom.

And now for a little OMG to kick your blah work day into high gear. At least, that’s what this stunning Marc Jacobs Brighton Rose Leather and Python Shoulder Bag did for me. This little darling melts hearts with its beautiful, neutral color palette, composed of ecru, camel, and slate shades, and its simple chain strap. Though python can scare some women away, it’s used intelligently here, in a small dose on the flap. That’s all this bag needs to look absolutely perfect! Available for $1495 at NET-A-PORTER.

Purses covered in names and logos are not my cup of tea, but if I had to pick one, I’d go for something like the Marc by Marc Jacobs Eazy Tote. The low contrast color combination makes the label a little less obvious, and it even feels like a spunky send-up of the Louis Vuitton logo. This bag is also available in black and white, if you want to rep Marc Jacobs a little more obviously. It’s $198 at Zappos.

Once again, Marc Jacobs has won me over! This time, it’s his Cobra Ruby Clutch I’m loving – although probably not enough to actually purchase. As usual, I’m a little wary of carrying a snakeskin bag, but if I were in the market I’d definitely consider this. I love the red hue – it’s not too bright or showy, which is a good thing since the exotic material stands out enough on its own. Also in camel. Available for $1195 at Barneys New York.

Marc Jacobs doesn’t typically do snakeskin, but when he does it’s always with great success. The designer’s Cobra Thompson Satchel manages to convey the material’s exoticism while maintaining a certain practicality that renders the bag a great choice for daily use. (The pretty palette really increases its versatility.) You can always count on MJ to deliver where functionality is concerned, too; this bag is quite spacious and features a zippered interior pocket to keep small items from escaping. There was nothing discreet or understated about the Marc by Marc Jacobs fall/winter 2012 collection, but it stood out for its heightened attention to elegance and even glamour. The ladylike range was a grunge-free presentation of full skirts and severe blouses, bold printed dresses, and strong statement coats. Mixed within were pops of color that came via gorgeous handbags – fuss-free clutches and oversized hobos among them. Take a peek at a few favorites:
Distinctly very un-Marc by Marc Jacobs, the Thunderdome Studded Tote is a structured carryall hammered with multicolored, multi-sized studs. The architectural influence is evident here; sharp points accentuate the bag and lend it a sort of indestructible appearance. For the woman who carries it, that translates into a look that exudes grit, confidence, and strength.
One of my favorites of the bunch is the Flipping Out Satchel, which nods to the colorblock trend but still manages to retain a classic appearance. A streak of bright red, a dash of warm, classic tan, and a touch of exotic textured leather on the flap make up quite an interesting design – one that could have been a mess, but ultimately succeeds. It’s perfect as the focal point of a conservative ensemble.
Perhaps the most timeless option is the Spot On Liz Shoulder Bag, a sturdy black purse boosted by just a hint of gold hardware. Suede panels along the sides soften up the design a bit, though not not enough to take away from the bag’s relatively severe, structured appearance.

What makes a Marc Jacobs purse special? Usually, it’s some combination of a gorgeous silhouette, visibly textured leather, and maybe a hint of hardware (but just a hint – otherwise it’s just too heavy). The Crosby Thompson Satchel ticks all those marks and goes the extra mile thanks to its brazen orange color. It’s a bit bolder than the year’s hot tangerine hue, so it makes a loud statement that’s sure to get you noticed. Available for $1250 at Barneys New York.

I want to be super excited about the Marc by Marc Jacobs Bars and Bells Colorblock Tote. It’s spacious, it’s made of Marc’s fabulous buttery leather, and it’s designed by one of my all-time favorites. Yet I feel less than inspired by the bland color palette. If you’re going to go the colorblocked route, shouldn’t you push the boat out a bit and experiment with a crazy color or two or three? I think so – especially for $578. Available at Nordstrom.

Attention, Marc Jacobs aficionados. The designer’s fall/winter 2012 collection is a mixed bag of fierce, feisty, prim, and proper. It’s not what I’d call my favorite MJ collection ever, but it’s still worth a second look. Here, a few standouts to help you build your fall shopping list:
Conservative it may be, but the Antonia Prince Handbag still manages to look fiercer than the average workday bag. In blazing red, it immediately adds a dash of color to your look – color that happens to go with everything from your most snore-worthy pinstriped suit to your sexiest, sleekest dress. Though laden with pockets, it’s generally cavernous inside; a center divider would have made this a practical powerhouse.
A little print never hurts. The Large Baroque Single with Zebra Embroidery pretty much speaks for itself. It’s not what I’d call “unique,” but it certainly stands out – and it looks phenomenal against something solid, like a bold wrap dress in an unexpected color. The pushlock closure looks quite striking against the strong pattern, too.
And ostrich skin definitely doesn’t hurt either, even though it’s not my favorite material in the world. The glazed material on the Prince Ostrich Bag looks stunning in general, though I do question the use of a somewhat putrid shade of yellowish-green. Unzip it to reveal a perfect everyday bag filled with all of those necessary essentials: zippered pockets, slip pockets, and compartments galore.
