There’s no getting around the fact that snake everything is big this fall. It’s big at any time of year, to be honest, but fall finds our slithery friends enjoying much more prominence than usual. Though I would shriek and run if I saw an actual snake with these colors all over it, I kinda love this Versace Structured Snake-Effect Leather Tote. It’s printed with quite the mesmerizing print, and makes brilliant use of an unusual color blend. I love that it can be worn in two ways – the hand-held method is ideal if you really want to show it off. It even has a bit of a seventies quality to it, thanks to its shape. Not bad at all! You know you’re a true child of the eighties when handbags start to remind you of Atari video games. I’m not sure which exact game fluttered through my mind when I laid eyes on this Versace Animal-Print Calf Hair Shoulder Bag, but the button-like detail at the center and the vivid red trim were both responsible. This Versace Leather Hobo Bag appears to be stamped with a presidential seal of approval. Between that, the ostentatious tassel embellishment, and the royal blue hue, I’m rather turned off by the obvious display of pomp. I do love me some Versace, no doubt about it, but I’m also of the belief that some of the label’s pieces are a wee bit much. Maybe it’s the fact that I’m not quite a high-flying jet setter (YET!), but I like a polished designer bag that doesn’t have to announce to the world that it is, in fact, high end. This Lambskin Leather Shoulder Flap Bag falls into the “too much” category thanks to its Greek-inspired pattern, visible label (big bag peeve there) and chunky gold chain strap. The texture on Versace’s Medium Metallic Leather Shoulder Bag is pretty dazzling. Ornate and a little Greco-Roman (but not in an overly literal way), it makes the bag unique. However, there’s something a little wrong about the metallic finish. Even though it’s not exactly out of style, something about the whole bag looks a little dated and cheap. And the longer I think about this bag, the tackier it gets; my mind wanders to Las Vegas, Caesars Palace, and eventually Showgirls. Versace was Nomi Malone’s favorite, after all. I hope this bag turns up in a more natural shade, but if you’re into the metallic, it’s $2,975.

Clearly inspired by a road map of some sort, this Versace Patent Leather Flap Shoulder Bag is one of the more underwhelming designer creations I’ve seen in recent history. I am going to be positive, though, and focus on what I do like: the shocking contrast of vivid red against white leather is striking, and the graphic-printed shoulder strap adds something unusual and intriguing to the mix. I might be more inclined to like it had the lines not resembled a highway. Find it for $1795 at Nordstrom.
