Though I disliked the red version of this bag, which is just slightly different in shape, I’m surprised to find that this Versace Rounded Flap Shoulder Bag kind of appeals to me. It’s a beauty, from its softly curved silhouette to its beige patent trim. Sure, I’m still not crazy about the waviness of the lines, but in general this style exudes a crisp, sophisticated quality that would complement something very safe during spring – think neutral, safari-inspired shirt dresses and the like. Another day, another pink bag. I swear, my bank account will be wiped out by the time spring gets here. It might be worth it, though, because this Versace Leather Shoulder Bag is to die for. To be fair, it’s really more of a pinky-lilac, but that makes it more interesting and more grown up than, say, a flat bubblegum pink. Hints of gold hardware and a just-noticeable-enough Versace nameplate make it even more fabulous. And to its credit, it’s a glamorous bag that knows how to play with casual duds, too. A Versace bag for under $3,000 is a find. A Versace bag under $300? This Purple Patent Pleated Bautletto Bag (try saying that three times fast!) is by Versace and just $290. Yes, it IS by the real designer and not a knockoff (Versachee?). It’s from the Jeans Couture line which is an affordable selection of fashionable handbags by Versace. The Purple Pleated bag shown here is a lovely little gleaming example of high-glam Italian design. The twisted handles are accented by gold tone studs and the large signature logo charm shows you may be on a budget but you’ve still got style. Available at Forzieri.

Does anyone do excessive better than Versace? I don’t think so. Proof: the new Ring-Detailed Leather Shoulder Bag, a bolder-than-thou accessory that knocks basic purple out of the park with a smattering of gold rings. That little detail is what makes the bag – not the suede and not the purple, glorious as it is. The ring strap, in particular, is quite eye catching. It’s not the finest Versace handbag I’ve ever seen, but it’s not quite forgettable either. Available for $1995 at Net-a-Porter.

Combining blue and purple and mixing materials can certainly veer dangerously into pimp territory but if anyone can pull off midnight suede with quiet refinement, it’s Versace.
