Wayuu Taya Knit Bags
| By: Tanya | ||
Every time I see a knitted bag, I wonder if I’m in the wrong line of work. My mom has been a knitter for decades, and she got me into it when I was old enough to appreciate that it’s pretty cool to create unique things out of pretty wools. This is precisely what Wayuu Taya does. The label is actually not so much a label as it is, well, The Wayuu Taya Foundation. This not-for-profit organization works to improve the lives of indigenous people in Latin America who suffer from poverty, malnutrition, and disease.
The bags are handmade, so no two are completely alike. Each bag takes three weeks (eight hours a day) to finish. More importantly, they’re designed by indigenous women at the Foundation’s Shukumajaya center. The fact that these bags have found their way to global-scale retailers (like Net-a-Porter and Free People) speaks to the foundation’s impact on the community. The proceeds of the bags go completely to the creators, so picking one up is certainly one way to make a difference and add a shot of funky style to your look at the same time.
This Wayuu Taya Susu hand-woven shoulder bag incorporates Aztec-inspired prints on its warm, mustard-hued backdrop. A bundle of tassels finishes it off nicely and brings the bag’s earthy theme full circle. It’s a fun option for women who prefer muted color palettes with their summer wear. Available for $175 at Endless.com.
There are bright options too, of course. This Wayuu Taya Mochilla cross-body bag packs a punch with a shade of pink that would make Barbie jealous. A maze of mesmerizing geometric shapes in black, neon green and yellow compete for the spotlight, but it’s really all about the entire combination, which is incredibly creative and complex. If you knit, you’ll likely appreciate the attention to detail, too. Find it for $175 at Net-a-Porter.
One of my personal favorites is the Wayuu Taya bucket bag, which exudes simplicity but isn’t so understated that it blends in with the crowd. The navy and pink pattern ensures that, along with two standout tassels that look cute, but aren’t childish or goofy. Find it for $132 at Revolve Clothing.
