Even though I’m not that much of a colorblock fan, I do like the way it’s used in this Hobo by Olivia Harris. The cream colored insert is framed by rich caramel leather, but the part I like best are the touches of sky blue in the handles and tassels. Amazing how a pop of color can change an entire landscape, isn’t it? This Deux Lux Charming Hobo capitalizes on one of the season’s boldest colors and brings the basic black bag to life. It’s not just the bright turquoise that’s so appealing at first glance, but also the lavishly braided handle. Then snap it open, and you’ll find a cavernous interior lined with juicy grape satin. This Gap Drawstring Boho Bag is pretty much my ideal companion for summers at the beach. It’ll hold my necessities, and I can even stuff a beach towel in on top since it has that handy drawstring. The stripes are vaguely nautical, which also makes me long for the sand and shore – so now all I need is for the sun to start shining! Available at Gap on preorder for $40.
While Nanette Lepore doesn’t usually design pieces I’d consider acquired tastes, apparently even she slips up from time to time. Lepore is one of my favorite designers, but her Neon Bow Hobo has me completely puzzled. I like the idea of a bow-adorned bag, but the bows here look like clothespins, and the neon pink trim is so discreet that it’s barely visible at first glance. I do love the contrast of beige and pink, but the effect is lost in the complicated mess of bows. Back to the drawing board, Lepore! Available for $495 at Piperlime.
A straw bag is ideal for summer, but carrying a casual tote may cause coworkers to wonder if you’re headed to the beach on your lunch break. (Good for you if you can swing that!) The Marianne Medium Hobo Bag is a simple but chic colorblock bag that would look perfect with a crisp linen suit. The turquoise base is topped with white pebble-grain calfskin. The turquoise is seen again atop the silver chain shoulder strap. If this all looks too conservative for your style, not to worry: as soon as you unzip this hot hobo you’ll find a cherry red linen lining. I’ve grown to expect nothing less than the best from Jason Wu. The designer rarely fails to deliver, and this time his fall/winter 2012 collection draws inspiration from the beauty of old-world China. Wu, who was born in Taiwan, went back to his roots for this heavily decorated collection. The lavish runway presentation, almost desperately dramatic and rich in over-the-top embellishment, was somehow both severe and sexy – pops of red, plum, and gold played nice with a primarily black palette and made everything look that much more powerful and ladylike. Naturally, the handbags were equally magnificent:
The Daphne Chinese Embroidered Clutch is one of the more obvious pieces – clearly influenced by his native country, it features traditional embroidery on the front, a heavy tassel along the side, and an attractive gold clasp closure. It would be downright stunning with any type of form-fitting dress, whether it’s a sheath or a cheongsam.
Obsessed, I am! The Ming Hobo Bag is simply beautiful, with an elaborately decorated Chinese brocade design that stuns in gold and vibrant jewel tones. With a simple magnetic tab closure, it’s designed for easy access and makes going glam for the evening (and perhaps even the day if you’re so inclined) that much simpler.
Of course, not everything is all decadence and drama. For a simpler, more everyday-appropriate option, there’s the Jourdan Chain Cross Body Bag. The deep bordeaux hue alone makes it more intriguing than your average workday bag, but it’s the sturdy construction, extra-clean lines, and slinky gold strap that make it truly special.
